Telecom shills still accusing advocates of creating a "5G Panic"

Ignoring international science, telecom insiders are still scolding RFK, the Secretary of Health and Human Services and Safe Tech advocates for circulating "fringe fears." "Yet in the viral age of 5G, claims once confined to conspiracy circles are now being amplified by the nation’s top health official," wrote Jeffrey Westling, a scholar with International Center for Law & Economics (ICLE) in an editorial for Broadband Breakfast early this year echoing pre-5G telecom statements. The editorial was countered by lobbyist Charles Frohman in Broadband Breakfast and by environmental journalist Theodora Scarato on the Jimmy Dore Show and Inside Towers. Not long ago Twitter, now X, had banned critiques of 5G. Wired Magazine UK wrote in 2018 that 5G fears were merely a political disinformation campaign.

CA On March 3, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez introduced H.R.7772 – LIGHT Safety Act to limit vehicle headlamp brightness to the Energy & Commerce Committee and Transportation & Infrastructure Committee. More sponsors needed.

Winning the opinion war. Out of almost 6000 comments against FCC rule 25-276.\, some 95% of commenters were against more wireless infrastructure.

Science

A startling statistic was published by CHD's Defender on March 12. A peer-reviewed survey by Next Research found that one in eight U.S. adults, reported EMR Syndrome symptoms. Of this 12.5%, most are men and 10% have a medical diagnosis. Australia & Canada were also surveyed.

Here is a great interview from Green Street with Alliance founder Ruth Moss, on the purpose of the site. Moss told NC4ST she is exploring how to make the site multilingual.

Did the Telecommunications Act of 1996 work out? Depends who you ask.

In a hastily announced series of hearings on the Legacy of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the House Committee on Energy & Commerce, discussed whether the Act is still working to close the connectivity divide. With concerns splitting along party lines: censorship vs infrastructure. Health issues were ignored. Lawmakers were angry about the BEAD slowdown and wanted fiber online and underwater for AI. Reps. crowed about slower tower permits, which, as activists know, is misleading. Nothing was addressed about EMF. "It was very clear how uninformed the FCC was" said Vanessa Shinmoto of Children's Health Defense, a member of the NC4ST coalition. NC4ST submitted comments regarding the meeting.

Verizon Pays $7.7 Million in damages to LA County

Court ordered Verizon to pay $7.7 million in investigation fees, damages and other costs for environmental violations at hundreds of wireless cell tower locations. Although no mention of electromagnetic radiation was made, the sites were sued for bad storage of batteries and other controlled toxic substances at the sites. The suit was brought jointly by several local attorneys' offices working together. Pointing to an achilles heel, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman reminded Telecoms that they're not invincible. “This settlement underscores that even the largest corporations must follow California’s environmental laws, and when they don’t, they will be held accountable.”

Flying the Unfriendly Skies: Coming Soon Electric Airplanes

If electric vehicles weren't enough, this summer LA will be hosting the Electric Aircraft 2026 conference on June 10th of this year. If you didn't know electric airplanes were a thing, please see this jubilant list of airplane models from EV Magazine. Although there will be a presentation on safety standards, it is unclear if EMF safety standards will be discussed. Airplanes are already notorious for amplifying microwave radiation, according to experts (including Camilla Rees and Lloyd Burrell), because airplanes are metallic structures. "It's called the Faraday cage effect," writes Burrell. "Would you consider sticking your head in a microwave oven when it's turned on? I don't think so."

Fiberhoods vs Towerhoods: The New Digital Divide

It's common these days to hear renters complain that their landlords cannot or will not get fiber. "Now I'm starting to think fiber may never come to my neighborhood because the people are poorer here," said one user on Reddit. In a 2012 article, Ars Technica forecasted a fiber divide expected to affect low usage communities. "They are using the digital divide against us," said a Harlem, NYC resident, as she protested a tower going up next to her building, calling out the redlining of historically low income areas for cell towers vs fiber. "Don't repeat history."

Wearables: To Regulate or Not to Regulate, that is the question

In January of this year the Food and Drug Administration updated guidance documents for wearable manufacturers. The documents categorized non-invasive devices as subject to less regulation than medical devices which pierce the skin or are used inside the organs. Fitbits or other lifestyle devices will not be regulated, nor will software or devices without a clearly medical purpose, but anything analyzing a pattern will be listed as regulated. As the industry works out its strategy, the invasive nature of Wi-Fi was not on anyone's radar. AI aided wearables are expected to include toilets. See below.

LOCAL GOVERNMENTS, COURTS & THE LAW

CA Preventively, the Nevada County Commission strengthened the rules in the county regarding telecom structures to add further guidelines for the building of cell towers. The county proposed to increase buffer zones between the towers and citizens, including notification requirements. The county also requests citizen input.

FL St. Pete Beach's new ordinance to limit cell towers was met with mixed reviews this March. The original draft mandated 40ft perimeter from housing, but what citizens got was different, said Lauren Mones of Florida Coalition for Safe Technology. City staff say they don't have the power to mandate according to state law. Children's Health Defense and Scott McCullough are on the case.

LA Citizens of Washington Parish complained about the height of a cell tower planned near a group of homes on Austin Varnado Rd. during a March planning and zoning meeting. Their health concerns were dismissed as per federal law. The residents moved on to the tornado threat posed by the structure. A law enforcement officer living there dismissed the need for a tower on the grounds of coverage gap. "We moved to get away from large structures," he said. "Would you want to see such a structure outside your home?"

MI The citizens of Ludington were doubly suspicious of telecom infrastructure plans this past March. At a county commission meeting they questioned Vertical Bridge's plans for a cellphone tower on their airport grounds. The tower, which was moved away from the original site, was again questioned by commissioners because the landowner of the new property was not consulted. The main issue cited by neighbors in the original vicinity was the direction of collapse in case of a disaster. The objection was sustained, despite the fact that towers are built to collapse in place.

Members of the National Call for Safe Technology discussed in our biweekly meeting the double threat facing the population. Ken Stroud, president of People Against Covert Torture and Surveillance, which advocates for neural rights, reported that civilians are increasingly reporting electromagnetic harassment either from remote antennae or from their own routers. He recommended that, besides hard-wiring their devices, individuals should be attentive to symptoms, including nausea, headaches, and palpitations, in the vicinity of particular antennae arrays, unidentified vehicles or even their own unshielded routers. Stroud also wished the public to know that directed energy weapons can cause harm solely by external means without the need for heavy metals in the body.

Rage Against The Machine

European activists organized a march on February 28th, entitled Pull The Plug in the city of London to demand more regulation over AI. At their core, activists were concerned about Palantir as an example of AI gone wild, disappearing human jobs, eroding intellectual property and digital privacy. They were also concerned about the ecological impact of EMR Syndrome and data centers. They described themselves not as luddites but asked for one thing: "a pause long enough for people to decide together what we are building."

Right to be Analog: Disconnection as a Human Right

Ecologists in Action, a Spain-based environmentalist group published a manifesto asking the European Union for the constitutional right to privacy and to use old fashioned means of communication, like books and paper: The Right to Disconnect.
